The Suffragettes 50p coin commemorates the centenary of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia. The WSPU led the militant campaign for women’s suffrage, which ultimately resulted in partial voting rights for women in 1918 and full franchise equality in 1928.
Designed by Mary Milner Dickens, the reverse of the coin features a suffragette chained to railings, holding a banner with the letters "WSPU." To the right is a ballot paper marked with a cross alongside the words "GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE," symbolizing their cause. This design celebrates the pivotal role of the suffragette movement in securing voting rights for women and honours their enduring legacy.
