Struck in 2023 to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, this Gold Proof Five-Sovereign Piece captures the beginning of a new royal era. It belongs to the first Sovereign collection to feature a crowned coinage portrait of The King, a design reserved for this momentous royal occasion.

The obverse features the crowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. Shown facing left in accordance with long-standing coinage tradition, His Majesty wears the Tudor Crown, while the surrounding Latin inscription identifies him as King and Defender of the Faith. The portrait was created exclusively for The Royal Mint’s Coronation collection and differs from the uncrowned definitive effigy used on regular coinage.

On the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless interpretation of St George and the dragon returns in its classic form. This iconic design has appeared on the Sovereign for more than two centuries and provides a powerful link between the historic traditions of the series and this important modern coronation issue.

This impressive Five-Sovereign Piece is struck in 22 carat gold to Proof standard. Weighing 39.94g and measuring 36.02mm in diameter, it is the largest denomination in the 2023 Coronation Sovereign collection, offering a broader canvas on which to appreciate the finely engraved detail of both designs.

Independently graded PF70, this example has been assessed as having no post-production imperfections visible at five-times magnification, the highest grade awarded. The Proof Five-Sovereign Piece was available only as part of the 2023 Coronation Five-Coin Gold Proof Set, issued with a limited edition of 1,050 sets.
